If you want to understand a French city, start by tasting its pastries.

Bordeaux might be best known for its amazing wines, but spend a little time wandering cobbled streets and you’ll quickly discover how serious this city is about pastry. Though famous for golden canelés with rum-infused centers, Bordeaux’s pastry chefs produce exquisite custard-filled choux pastry, bright fruit tarts, ornate chocolate entremets, and of course, Viennese goodies that shatter into your hands with every bite. Each pâtisserie is a little gallery of edible art.

Living in a city with so many delicious options, can be quite dangerous to someone with a raging sweet tooth and a small obsession for baked goods. Me, its me. In most cities I’ve lived, there’s been only one true French Viennoiserie offering classic pastries and breads, possibly a few select pâtisseries. Growing up, we had just one made-from-scratch cake bakery and a doughnut shop—both free of plastic-wrapped sweets, but laminated pastry? That was a French dream. Luckily, in Bordeaux, quality artisanal bites are never too far, just around most corners, if you know where to look.
